Introduction to Haguenau, France
The picturesque town of Haguenau was originally constructed around a 12th century Moder River island hunting lodge. An imperial palace was eventually built on the lodge site, and for centuries the town became the location of several fierce battles between French and German forces. The town was last under German control during WWII, and German influence remains strong here, even though the town has now become one of France's easternmost communities. Today, Strasbourg is the only city in the Bas-Rhin department with a bigger population than Haguenau. Visitors can easily walk from any of the Haguenau hotels to most local attractions. Despite centuries of damage from various wars, some monuments of more than 900 years old still stand in the town, and France's biggest undivided forest lies to its immediate north. Three historic gates still guard the city, and the ancient customs house and water mill still stand, as do the Gothic churches of St Nicolas and St Georges. Both of the town's major museums, the Alsatian Museum and the Historic Museum, are housed in historic buildings.
