Introduction to Grimaud, France
The perched medieval village of Grimaud received its name from the Grimaldi family, with whom the village has been historically linked for centuries. Many Grimaud hotels and homes have been painstakingly renovated, and colourful flowers blossom along the village's paved streets. One local church, St Michel, dates back to Roman times. The other major churches here are Notre Dame de la Questa, constructed in the 11th century, the Penitent's Chapel from the 15th century, and the chapel of St Roch from the 18th century. St Roch is also the name of a village 17th century windmill which was restored to its original working power in 1990. The small Pont des Fees aqueduct used to transport water to the community during the 16th century. Three Gothic arches guard the 16th century Maison des Templiers, the village's most significant historic structure aside from its 11th century castle, which was destroyed to ruins during the 16th century French Wars of Religion. It takes about 60 minutes to travel from the main village to the planned holiday resort of Port Grimaud aboard the little train which regularly travels between the two picturesque communities.
