Grenoble, situated at the base of the attractive French Alps, has a long history dating back to pre-Christian times. The city has been a favourite with visitors to France for many years, and is home to a wide range of Grenoble hotels, some located close to the picturesque Isere River. Visitors can easily access this city as it is served by Grenoble-Isere Airport and the TGV rail network. Within the city, a comprehensive bus and tram service makes it easy to get around, and the flat terrain is bicycle-friendly. The city is a university city and consequently has a wide selection of bars, cafes and restaurants, including two at the top of the mountainside on which La Bastille, an ancient fortification, stands. This attraction is served by a cable car. Other important sights in the city are the Palace of the Parliament, dating from the 16th century and several interesting museums including the Museum of Grenoble and the Archaeological Museum of Saint-Laurent. There are a number of important festivals hosted annually; the Grenoble Jazz Festival in March is one, and there are many music and artistic venues throughout the city. Sports lovers will appreciate convenient access to ski fields, and hiking, mountaineering and mountain biking options are close by.
