Situated in the southwest of France, in the department of Lot, Gourdon is a small town that is rich in history. Records of the town's recent past, all the way back to the mid-13th century, have been meticulously recorded at the Town Hall, but it is the prehistoric period for which Gourdon is most well known. The caves at Cougnac serve as a remarkable testament to the area's origins thousands of years ago, with a number of prehistoric cave paintings on display, many of which depict animals hunted by the people that once lived here. There is also a museum here that explains many of the artefacts on display, of which there are many that have been found in this region. Despite the small size of this town, Gourdon hotels are numerous, meaning there is no shortage of options from budget to high-end, particularly in the four-star category. Most places to stay lie around the outskirts.
