Introduction to Gap, France
The ancient Provencal Haute d'Alpes city of Gap was first settled 2,000 years ago, and has a chequered history of changing loyalties and total devastation during the French Wars of Religion due to its location on the high pass crossroads between the Rhine Valley and Italy. A Roman military camp in 14 BC, and archbishopric by the 5th century AD, the town was a major trading post for leather and wool in the Middle Ages. Charence Castle is its main landmark, set in a landscaped park holding a lake, waterfalls and shaded walking trails. The city has an enviable record of 300 sunny days a year.
