Introduction to Forcalquier, France
During the Middle Ages, Forcalquier, France served as the capital of Haute-Provence. Today, this community situated on the slopes of a steep hill in between two mountain ranges called Luberon and Lure may have diminished in importance, but remains no less welcoming and picturesque. The largest of the Forcalquier hotels sits in the middle of the community, but many scenic countryside homes called gites also warmly welcome visitors. Although Forcalquier's once mighty medieval citadel now stands in ruins, it was replaced in 1875 by the equally impressive Notre Dame de Provence chapel whose octagonal shape dominates the local landscape and whose carillon rings throughout the community each summer Sunday morning. A Renaissance fountain has stood in the Place Saint-Michel area since 1511, and the doorways along its narrow streets were first built between the 12th and 16th centuries. Traditional pottery, glass works, and artefacts from as far back as prehistoric times are displayed in the municipal museum.other spellings: forcalquierhotels, forcalquire otel, forcalqueir hotell, forcalqiuer hote, forcaluqier hotle
