Introduction to Fontainebleau, France
Located less than 35 miles southeast of Paris, Fontainebleau is an historic city in the capital's metropolitan area. The highlight here is Fontainebleau Chateau, one of the largest of its kind in the country, extended by a number of French monarchs but first started some 500 years ago. It's a magnificent structure, full of the pomp and ostentatious touches to be expected from a royal manor house of its size and stature, and featuring wide, perfectly-kept lawns, a number of ornate turrets and beautiful, tall windows laid into the detailed stonework. Due its historical significance, the chateau is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Close by is Fontainebleau Forest, which is home to a number of endangered species and is recognised as a national park, having previously served as a royal hunting ground. Most Fontainebleau hotels lie within easy walking distance of the chateau and forest.
