The commune of Etaples sur Mer, France can be found on the other side of a bridge from Le Touquet, in the centre of northern-most France. The community's name originates from an Old Dutch word meaning 'staple', and this was one of the region's staple ports for years during the Middle Ages when Dutch was the predominant spoken language. Etaples sur Mer hotels are modest, and all of them are close to the ridge of the dunes where the community stands. Even more natural dunes dominate the landscape of the neighbouring Canche Bay nature reserve. A seafaring museum is situated in the community's former fish market, and a workshop and museum with more than 280 miniature models are found adjacent to the Etaples sur Mer tourist information office. The local archaeological museum is called Quentovic. Visitors can simulate the experience of steering a 24m fishing trawler at the Mareis or pay their respects to the over 11,500 WWI and WWII soldiers buried at etaples Military Cemetery.
