Introduction to Dunkerque, France
The port of Dunkerque is the first place many British visitors see when they sail across the English Channel from Dover to France. Although many visitors only stay in the city a short time before proceeding to other French destinations or nearby Belgium, whose border is just 10kms away, it's well worth spending at least one night at one of the many Dunkerque hotels to see more of the city. Dunkerque is still frequently called by its former English name, Dunkirk, and French was not the predominantly spoken language here until well into the 20th century. The port is France's third biggest after Le Havre and Marseilles, and hour-long guided boat tours are widely available. The local lighthouse was constructed on the Risban ruins in 1838. Two city belfries have become UNESCO World Heritage sites. One belfry stands on top of the City Hall, while the other belongs to the Church of St Eloi. The St Eloi belfry is 58m high and boasts unforgettable views of not only the town, but also its port and nearby Flanders. A remembrance memorial pays tribute to the WWII Battle of Dunkirk.other spellings: dunkerquehotels, dumkerque otel, dunkerqeu hotell, dunkeruqe hote, dunkeqrue hotle
