The currently quiet community of Domfront, France was once the location of several fierce battles because it is so close to the border between Normandy and Brittany. Today, this community is considered one of France's most beautiful detours and many Domfront hotels are historic buildings in their own right. However, the most impressive landmark here remains Chateau de Domfront, first constructed during the height of the fighting around the community in the early 11th century. Although the castle is now in ruins, it has been classified as an official historic monument by France's Ministry of Culture since the year 1875. Two former chapels, towers, and ramparts are among the castle's surviving ruins, which are now part of a public park with free admission. The community's most important churches are Notre-Dame Sur l'Eau, constructed around 1020, and St Julien, best known for its beautiful paintings. A museum called Charles Leander is housed inside the community's stately 19th century Town Hall.
