Introduction to Dinan, France
Right in the northwest of France, close to the English Channel, in the department of Cotes d'Armor, Dinan is a splendid old walled town built into the hillside alongside the River Rance. It's a picturesque medieval town with excellent, scenic rural views and plenty of charm, mostly derived from the many old buildings, several of which date back to the 13th century, Parts of the original city walls still stand and can be walked around. There are also a number of other structures of note including: Saint Saviour's Basilica, a magnificent old Romanesque building; St Malo's Church, in ostentatious Gothic style; and Dinan Chateau, which joins part of the medieval ramparts that date back to the late 14th century. The latter also houses the local museum. Although there are a handful of Dinan hotels beside the river, most lie within the centre of town on and around the Rue de L'Ecole.
