A port on the English Channel in the department of Seine-Maritime, Dieppe is a large town that for many British visitors represents a gateway to France that need not be overlooked upon disembarking the ferry. Aside from its popular pebbled beach, there is a great deal to see and do here. The cultural highlight here is Dieppe Chateau, originally founded in the late 12th century and today serving as a museum and an exhibition space with fascinating maritime artefacts on display as well as ivory carvings and old folding fans. The building itself is of interest with its mish-mash of restored walls made of different types of stone, as are the superbly manicured lawns and gardens that come to life in the summer. Dieppe hotels are numerous given the town's size and port status, with many lying on and around Boulevard de Verdun, close to the local casino.
