Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains, close to the border with Spain and the Mediterranean Sea, Couiza is a small French town in the department of Aude, not far from Perpignan. It's a pretty town with numerous historical buildings and great walks in the nearby hills that climb steeper as they get near the Spanish border. Of note is the Church of Saint Jean Baptiste which lies close to other old architecture that makes for an excellent walking tour of the town. Many of the attractions here are water-based including those on the Aude River, such as fishing, as well as at the nearby spas at Alet Les Bains and Rennes Les Bains, which make the most of the surrounding thermal waters. In the winter, skiing lies close by. Couiza hotels are mostly located close to the river and the nearby main road, Route des Pyrenees.
