Introduction to Cognac, France
The famous French brandy is the first thing on most people's minds after hearing name of Cognac, a western French town between Saintes and Angouleme. However, this town, 400kms southwest of Paris, is also a significant stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route and the home of a training base for the French Air Force. Most Cognac hotels are modest two-star accommodations, and most of the community lies on the left bank of the Charente River. The part of town on the river's right bank is called the St Jacques district. Cognac drinks must be prepared to very strict specifications in order to earn their name, and at least four local Grande Marque houses offer sightseeing tours. The town for which the drink is named is also home to one of France's few English-style public gardens, which contain the Town Hall and a local museum of art and history. The old town is filled with gargoyles, cobblestoned streets, and salamander sculptures in honour of King Francois I. The former Middle Ages trading post of Chateau des Valois and a beautiful church called Saint-Leger are just two of many historic structures in this medieval quarter.
