Lying in central France in the department of Indre et Loire on the Cher River, Chenonceaux is a tiny town that swells in population during the warm summer months due to a large influx of tourists that come to visit the historic buildings here. Among them, Chenonceaux Chateau is the undisputed highlight with its wide gravity-defying arches that stretch out into the river to stunning effect. First mentioned nearly 1,000 years ago, this building has undergone a number of transformations since it was first conceived until its present design in the classic French Renaissance style. The building itself is huge with a number of enormous rooms, different sized turrets and a main tower on dry land that oversees a series of lawns and flower gardens that look breathtaking in the summer sunshine against the river. Chenonceaux hotels are numerous despite the town's small size, with many offering excellent river views.
