The end of the rail line which begins at Paris Gare de l'Est station ends 90kms northeast of the French capital in a picturesque community called Chateau-Thierry. Chateau-Thierry hotels and guest homes are close enough to Paris for visitors to easily travel to the city, yet far enough away to provide quiet refuges. This tranquil community along the Marne River shares its name with two major battles. One of these battles occurred in 1814 during the Napoleonic Wars, while the other took place just over 100 years later towards the end of WWI. A tribute to the American soldiers who lost their lives during the latter battle, including Teddy Roosevelt's son, now stands in the town. Another statue is a likeness of French poet and local resident Jean de la Fontaine. The poet's birthplace, an elegant 16th century estate, stands at the foot of the town's old fortress. Chateau-Thierry is situated at the heart of the 600kms Champagne route, and the grapes which grow in its surrounding vineyards are used to make the famous French bubbly beverage.
