Introduction to Chalon sur Saone, France
Situated in the central eastern region of France in Bourgogne, not far from the Swiss border, Chalon Sur Saone is the largest town in the department of Saone et Loire, situated right on the river that gives it its name. The town is famous in France as the birthplace of photography, and there is a museum here dedicated to early memorabilia associated with the art, including some two million photographs and early equipment including cameras. St Vincent's Cathedral is the architectural highlight here with its two impressive towers which date back to the 19th century, while other parts of the structure are much older, at least 1,200 years old. The main square here is a great place to sit or stroll with its many cafes and Friday and Sunday markets, so too is the Saone riverfront which extends through the town. Chalon Sur Saone hotels are almost all located in this area, in and around the road which connects with Lyon.
