Introduction to Cavaillon, France
Situated in southeastern France, close to the Cote D'Azur, Cavaillon is a small historic town surrounded by craggy hills and scenic walks in the foothills of the Alps. Aside from its melons, which are grown here in abundance and shipped to other parts of the country and beyond, the town is famous for its ancient Roman Catholic cathedral of Notre Dame et Saint Veran de Cavaillon, which ranks as a French national monument and major tourist draw, especially in the summer. The building features original grey stonework and an impressive tower that juts out over the low rooftops of the town, and although it could probably do with some restoration and cleaning, it exudes a certain charm due to its untouched, original state that makes it less ostentatious compared with many other French cathedrals. Cavaillon hotels are mostly located in the centre of the town, close to the cathedral and the railway line to the south.
