Calais is situated at the narrowest point of the English Channel, opposite the English town of Dover, in northern France. Accommodation in the town is provided by Calais hotels and guesthouses. Calais hotels in the town centre are grouped around Parc Richelieu. More Calais hotels, on the seafront, are on Digue Gaston Berthe (road). Calais has a few interesting sights, such as the magnificent Flemish style Town Hall, with an ornate Rodin statue in front of it, and the 13th century Tour de Guet Watchtower. Calais is noted for its shopping especially that offered by Cit Europe, a vast shopping complex with shops, dining outlets and entertainment venues, and L’ Usine, a designer product factory outlet centre. Calais has good beaches framed by tall cliffs. A popular local pastime is a walk along the top of Calais’ cliffs. The famed white chalk cliffs of Dover are easily visible from Calais on a fine day. Calais hotels also offer an ideal stopover point for people taking the passenger ferries between France and England.
