Introduction to Cahors, France
Situated in the southwest of France, equidistant between the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, Cahors is the capital of the department of Lot and a major wine area. Long before nearby Bordeaux established itself as a centre of viticulture, Cahors was producing its infamous black wine, which is made up of strong tannic grapes including Malbec to make heady reds. Aside from the wines, this is a town with a strong historic tradition. The iconic Valentre Bridge is undoubtedly the architectural highlight here with its jutting turrets dating back about 700 years, although further restoration work dates back to the much more recent time of the late 19th century. St Etienne Cathedral is also of major significance and a national monument, with its impressive interconnecting domes, arches and towers all in sturdy stonework representing the transition from late Romanesque to Gothic design. Cahors hotels are mostly found close to the cathedral, in the very centre of the city.other spellings: cahorshotels, carhors otel, cahos hotell, cahord hotes, hotle in cahars
