The Alps march right into the deep blue sea here in Cagnes sur Mer, a commune in the appropriately named Alpes-Maritimes region of southeastern France. The highlight in this town is a four-kilometre stretch of pebble beach near gorgeously clear water. Swimming and water sports are popular here. On the cultural side, there's famous painter Auguste Renoir's estate, Les Collettes, which is peppered with olive groves. He was one of several artists who called the city home. Also attractive is the Haut-de-Cagnes medieval castle. You can also watch horses race at the Hippodrome de la Cote d'Azur.
