Situated along the Caramy River is the capital of the Centre Var region of southern France, Brignoles. In medieval times, the counts of Provence built their summer palace here, and it remains the star attraction of the area. The palace is open to visitors, who can check out a 13th century tomb, amazing Christian altars and an informative museum. The historic core, known as Old Brignoles, is the most atmospheric part of town. Visitors can join a guided tour that covers the ramparts or the inner city, which are filled with old stone buildings, towers and timeless squares. The centre of the modern face of Brignoles is just a short walk from the old quarter. It has a lively Saturday morning market and a well-developed commercial district full of places to eat, drink and shop.
