Introduction to Briancon, France
Right up against the Italian border in the southeast of France, Briancon is the highest city within the European Union, set on a plateau in the Alps at more than 1,300 metres above sea level. It's a historic city with plenty of activities on offer all year round. The local ice hockey team plays in the top tier of the French league, and there is a low-altitude ski station of the resort at Serre Chevalier, which is the largest draw here during winter. In summer, cycling is popular and often the city features in the Tour de France. Other warm weather pursuits include kayaking and rafting on the Durance and Guisane rivers, which join in the city and create a steady current on the back of snowmelt that feeds the rapids. Briancon hotels are mostly dedicated ski accommodation given the local population triples during the winter season, with many rooms located close to the rivers and slopes.
