Introduction to Bordeaux - Chartrons
Lining the banks of the Garonne River estuary, the major French city of Bordeaux is the capital of the Aquitaine region, a major port and home to over a million people. Known as the planet's premier wine industry capital, the city offers a historic quarter that has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage site status. The city features 18th century urban architecture and a 1,200-year heritage of wine-making in the region. Magnificent architectural treasures are led by the Place Royale and its quays, set along the riverside in a vast, sweeping half-circle of stone arches that are illuminated at night and reflected in the still waters. Chartrons hotels are located along the quays, with the quarter named after the 14th century Chartreux Convent. This convent was the original occupant of the riverside area, which had become the hub for wine shippers and merchants by the 18th century. The imposing mansions set around the city were built by the wealthy merchants and are preserved in the old quarter as a vital part of the city's heritage. other spellings: chartrons hotels, chartron otel, chartons hotell, chatrons hote, cartrons hotes
