Arcachon is situated in Landes Forest, southwest of Bordeaux by about 55 kilometres. Due to the excellent beaches, the town is a popular seaside resort and there are many Arcachon hotels, some of which have stunning views out to sea. The beaches stretch for more than seven kilometres, but the most impressive sand formation is in Arcachon Bay; the Dune de Pyla is the largest sand dune in Europe. The huge wall of sand is a daunting landmark on the horizon as it is 107m-high in some places, 500m wide, and continues for nearly three kilometres. To make the most of the beach areas during the day, as well as just sunbathing, there is a host of water sports including school, diving and boat trips around the bay. In the evening, Casino de la Plage is regularly bustling with people, while the restaurants cook fresh, heavenly seafood that goes excellently with the award winning wines from nearby Bordeaux.
