Introduction to Biarritz, France
Napoleon III was one of the first people to spend a seaside holiday in Biarritz. The Bay of Biscay waters next to this community in southeast France, just 18kms from the Spanish border, were said to cure various health conditions in the 18th century. Nowadays, surfing and sunbathing are the main attractions here. Biarritz hotels may cost more than those in nearby Bayonne, but they are still cheaper than their French Riviera counterparts. This may no longer be France's most prestigious seaside getaway, but it remains the country's unofficial surfing and golfing capital. Most surfers prefer the long Cote de Basque beach over the more crowded Grand Plage main beach. The local casino lies behind the Grand Plage, while the white Rocher de la Vierge Virgin Mary statue still stands on a rock in the sea. Visitors can also seek therapeutic sea water treatments at spas such as the Thermes Marins or observe the sea creatures at the Museum of the Sea. An Asian art museum and the Russian Orthodox St Eugenie Church are the best known attractions beyond the beach.Visit our Biarritz Travel Guide
