The old historic quarter of Besancon, some of which dates back to Roman times, is within the within the horseshoe created by the river. Many of the best hotels in Besancon are situated on the inside and outside banks of the river’s loop and offer views of the river and the old city. The city’s accommodation is provided by these Besancon hotels, which range from two to four stars, and by various guest houses and self-catering facilities. A short walk from Besancon hotels is Besancon Citadel. The citadel is well preserved and a popular sightseeing destination with museums and a Roman arch. Besancon Citadel is on a hill at the entrance to the river’s horseshoe and from the top offers stunning views of the city and the rolling hills around Besancon.
