One of the most important wine centres in the country, the Burgundy city of Beaune lies between Geneva and Paris, in the Cote-d'Or region of eastern France. Surrounded by famous vineyards and wineries, and just 30kms away, the town of Chalon-sur-Saone was once a busy riverside hub for transporting the local wines along the river to the Canal du Centre. Nowadays, Chalon is an attractive town best known for its annual international street artist festival, which attracts performers and audiences alike to Chalon-sur-Saone hotels from across the world. Interesting sights in town include St Vincent's Cathedral, with its remaining original elements dating from the 8th century. The pretty town square is a great place for people-watching, with a good choice of coffee shops, traditional cafés and busy weekend markets. Charming riverside walks alongside the Saone River lead to the surrounding countryside, with its vineyards and quaint agricultural villages.
