A booming cultural centre and home to an annual theatre and arts festival, the city of Avignon has much to explore within its city limits and even more in the surrounding area. Avignon outskirts provide beach access to the south near Aix-en-Provence, and the popular tourist destination of Nimes is a short distance southwest. There are three UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby; west of the city is Le Pont du Gard, where visitors can enjoy hiking, canoeing and marvelling at the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe. Tourists can get a taste of true Provencal culture while visiting the Roman monuments of Arles, located near the bordering Languedoc. To the north is Orange, the site of beautifully intact Roman theatres as well as France's oldest festival, and the country's best vineyards are on the way in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Avignon-Caumont Airport is southeast of the city and Gare d'Avignon TGV is the main train station on the outskirts, making it easy to get in and explore the region from Avignon hotels.
