People often label Aurillac as the coldest town in France. While this label is not necessarily true, the town does hold the title of highest altitude among the towns in France that have a weather report. Set in the Auvergne region in the Cantel, Aurillac is a pretty town with the Jordanne River flowing through it and a number of lovely green parks to relax in. Among the scenic churches in town, Saint Geraud Church and Notre Dame aux Neiges are two worth close inspection. Just north of Place du Square is a web of narrow pedestrian cobblestone streets ideal for exploration. A range of cafes, shops and little bars can be found here. Check out the big Wednesday and Saturday markets behind the Hotel de Ville, or Town Hall, near where the nicest hotels in Aurillac are located. The Volcans Museum is a decent place to learn about the history of this part of the Cantal. It resides in Chateau St Etienne, a striking 11th-century castle on a bluff overlooking town.
