Introduction to Aups, France

In the first layer of foothills in the Alps is the village of Aups, a lovely little place tucked into the hills of southeastern France. While tourism isn't a major economic factor here, the tranquil environment and beautiful scenery make Aups a great place to visit. Every Wednesday and Saturday, the town's Provencal Market brings fresh produce and other interesting goods to the village square. Its famous black truffle market happens every Thursday during the winter season. Visiting these markets is the best way to get to know the local scene, and for those who want to linger there are a handful of pleasant hotels in Aups catering to the trickle of travellers passing through. There is a rich history here, evident in the old winding streets and historic buildings like the Clock Tower, Ursuline Convent and the ruins of a 12th-century castle right on the edge of town. Plenty of outdoor recreation is available around Aups, including at Lake St Croix and La Grave.
