Introduction to Arreau, France
Right on the border with Spain is the French town of Arreau, a popular spot along the traditional Tour de France route and a great destination for exploring the Pyrenees. The village is tiny and compact but it contains everything a traveller needs for a few days of mountain relaxation. Good restaurants, a couple of bars and useful shops are all clustered around the downtown core, with its scenic river cutting right through everything. Place City Hall and its connected buildings is the centre of Arreau, and a truly lovely example of medieval architecture. Check out the Museum of Cagots for background information on this region then explore Chapel St Exupere, Maison des Lys and the Castle of Nestes, where the history is best experienced first-hand. There are only a few hotels in Arreau, but they are all very nice upscale accommodations. All kinds of outdoor recreation abound in the hills and valleys that surround Arreau, though driving is an equally great way to take in the sights of the French Pyrenees.
