In the Pyrenees of southern Franace is the delightful district of Ariege, loaded with natural attractions and enticing historic towns. Pamiers is one of the larger commercial places in the district, good for its selection of restaurants and shops as well as its three historic churches like the striking Cathedral of Saint Antonin. The medieval town of Mirepoix is another charmer, especially for the sidewalk cafes along its downtown core. The castle at Foix is well worth a day outing, as is the hilltop town of Saint Lizier with its narrow winding streets and excellent views. On Saturdays, check out the local market at Saint Girons. There are dozens of great options for hotels in Ariege, as most villages and towns have a handful of inns and pensions for tourists. Outdoor recreation in the Pyrenees is another highlight of the Ariege department. The Haut Couserans contain Mount Valier, a sublime peak easily enjoyed along the road to Port d'Aula.
