Introduction to Amiens - Albert
The northern French city of Albert began as a Roman outpost named Encre more than 2,000 years ago. However, this small city, 25kms north of Amiens, is now best known as the location of the WWI Battle of the Somme. Unfortunately, much of the city was destroyed during this time, including its original Notre Dame de Brebieres basilica. The 'golden virgin' statue at the top of the basilica was informally renamed 'the leaning virgin' after a WWI shell hit the statue and set it on a horizontal position. After WWI, much of Albert was completely reconstructed, including many Albert hotels. However, the city's most impressive reconstructed building of all is its new basilica, which the son of the original designer faithfully rebuilt to its original splendour. The entrance to the Somme 1916 museum is situated at the side of the basilica, and tunnels through the church lead to a peaceful park. These underground shelters once protected the city's residents from WWII bombing raids.
