Introduction to Albi - City Centre
With evidence of its first settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, the city of Albi is steeped in historic treasures. Sitting on the River Tarn, just an hour's drive northeast of Toulouse, the city centre has the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum located within its Berbie Palace, once a bishop's estate. The castle adjoins Sainte-Cecile Cathedral, now called Albi Cathedral, which is the seat of the Archbishop of Albi and contains the oldest and largest Italian Renaissance frescoes in France. Built in the Southern Gothic style and known best for its ornamented stone rood screen, the cathedral and its surrounding Episcopal city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Albi City Centre hotels place tourists right in the midst of these brick-covered, half-timbered and corbelled houses. There are two additional churches in the city, the oldest being the Saint Salvi Church and the other being the beautiful St-Madeleine Church. Two well-preserved houses, the Laperouse residence and the house of Vieil Alby, join the city's sacred and modern art museums as Albi's cultural highlights. With a number of green spaces within the city centre and along the riverbank, Albi is a must-see destination in southern France.
