Helsinki Travel Guide - Things To Do
City Centre Walk: Katajanokka, the area that begins just to the east of Kauppatori, is on the other side of the canal from the mainland. This is a quaint, charming residential quarter as well as home to the city’s major port.
You’ll find one of the largest cathedral’s in Europe here - the spectacular Orthodox Uspenskin Katedraali; and also close by is the elegant Lutheran Cathedral, looming over Senaatintori and the Ateneumin Taidemuseo. On Katajanokka, the first major sight is Uspenskin Katedraali and its onion-shaped dome.
From this centre, you’ll want to head back in a south-westerly direction for a short distance, bringing you to the seafront, where you’ll cross a short bridge back to Kauppatori.
Take a Trip to the Helsinki Zoo: among the many interesting features of this well-planned zoo is a section devoted to tropical animals from the Amazon rainforest, Africa and Asia, including insects, frogs, lizards, monkeys, snakes, spiders and many varieties of birds. There’s also a special arctic section that deals with the animal life of northern Finland and its arctic neighbours: you’ll find musk oxen, polar foxes, snowy owls and European forest reindeer in this environment.
Visit the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art: this facility alone is impressive and its collection of modern art from the three decades spanning the 1960s to the 1990s is even more so. You’ll find major works here by Finnish and international artists of renown. The museum also has a strong programme of dance, film, music and performance art.
