Introduction to Vaasa - City Centre
On the west coast of Finland, Vaasa is described as being the country's sunniest city. Attractions are predominantly concentrated close to the city centre, meaning that the majority of places can be reached on foot. The nightlife, restaurants and bars are established around market square, which also contains the historic Statue of Freedom which commemorates the city's key role during the Finnish civil war. There are around 20 museums to visit, with highlights including the Brage Open Air Museum, which boasts a 19th century farm, and the Kuntsi Modern Art Museum. For art enthusiasts the latter has international exhibitions as well as pieces by great Finnish artists. The price of entry also includes access to the Tikanoja Museum, which displays traditional works by Matisse and Picasso. Walking from Vaasa City Centre hotels, visitors are only minutes away from the Water Tower, a modern building that rises to 47m, offering good city views. The inside even doubles as a climbing wall.
