Introduction to Turku, Finland
A renovated, 13th century castle near the ferry terminal is among the few remaining landmarks from Turku's glorious past as Finland's oldest city and first national capital. Although the Russians moved Finland's capital to Helsinki in 1812, its predecessor still has plenty of attractions and Turku hotels. The city's medieval castle at its southern tip features magnificent banquet halls, a museum and two dungeons. A 13th century cathedral towers over the Aura River, while an art museum lies under the Engel Observatory's wooden dome. Over 350 more works of art are displayed at the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova contemporary art museum, while a handicrafts museum in Luostarinmaki is housed in one of the few city buildings that was not destroyed during the 1827 fire. Visitors can see the births of chicks and lambs at Kuralan Kylamaki working farm and living history village near the city centre. A pink statue of the famous posankka, a creature crossed between a duck and a pig, greets visitors to the Caribia Spa. Over 1,400 musical instruments are exhibited at a museum named after Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and located just 150m from the cathedral.Visit our Turku Travel Guide
