Introduction to Turku - Artukainen
Around five kilometres west of the centre of the exciting city of Turku, and with natural attractions on its doorstep, is the extremely small community of Artukainen. With just 78 people living here, visitors should not expect to find anything in the way of amenities. The town is best known as the home of Finland's first airport, Turku Airport. Today, the village is mainly an industrial hub, a fact that mainly deters Finns from living or visiting here. Its location on the southwest coast of Finland, however, means there are lots of choices for water sports, sailing and coastal exploration. There is also an incredible array of cultural and historic attractions just down the road in Turku, one of Finland's most interesting cities. Every July, the area hosts a popular medieval market that recreates the scenes of centuries past. Other fun festivals featuring music, sport and art also converge on the area around Artukainen every summer.
