Introduction to Tampere, Finland
People began to gather near the Tammerkoski rapids which run through the present day Finnish city of Tampere during the 7th century. Today, this city between the Nasijarvi and Pyhajarvi lakes, 170kms north of Helsinki, is Finland's third-largest and the biggest inland city in all of the Nordic nations. The city received its nickname, Manse, after Manchester in Great Britain, and the two cities share similar industrial histories. Although most local factories have been closed for at least 50 years, their distinctive red-brick buildings still stand and have been converted to restaurants, offices or Tampere hotels. No building here, however, is older than the old Messukyla church, an unheated structure whose oldest corners are from the 1400s. The city's most unique museums are the world's first spy museum, a Lenin museum and the Amuri Museum of Workers' Housing, which depicts how the city's 19th century workers lived.
