Introduction to Tampere - City Centre
Tampere is situated in Finland between Lake Nasijarvi in the north and Lake Pyhajarvi in the southern region. The Tammerkoski rapids run through Tampere as it is situated at the connecting point of the two lakes, where there is an 18 metre elevation drop. Tampere became a city after the people realised the potential of the water as a source for hydropower in the 18th century. Hameenkatu is the main street and the central focus of the town, and is lined with Tampere hotels. There is a railway to the east and the Church of Alexander is situated to the west. The city centre is characterised by its many red-brick industrial buildings which were built in the 1960s. The city is vibrant and visitors seeking a base from which to explore the main Tammerkoski rapids and the surrounding areas will find plenty of choices when it comes to lodgings.
