Introduction to Suomussalmi, Finland
Suomussalmi is a municipality located in the east of Finland, along the border with Russia. It is situated in the Kainuu region and has a population of just over 9,000 inhabitants. It is the second southern-most area of Finland's reindeer-herding land and within driving distance of Lapland. The area is surrounded by various lakes, making it an interesting place to visit for nature enthusiasts. The municipality is served by Route 5 road, which leads north to Lapland and runs for most of the length of the country in the opposite direction towards Helsinki. The area is perhaps most famous for the Battle of Suomussalmi, which took place during the Winter War between Soviet and Finnish forces between December 1939 and early January 1940. Given the relatively low population and lack of tourist attractions, there few Suomussalmi hotels for visitors to choose from. Yet many have excellent facilities and offer four or five-star accommodation. other spellings: suomusalmi otel, sumusalmi hotell, suomusselmi hote, somusalmi hotles
