Set on the River Salo in the far south of Finland, the city of Salo is nowadays best known as the production centre of Nokia mobile phones. The city was founded in the 16th century as a commercial hub for its rural surroundings, with the river the means of transport of goods to the nearby seacoast. Today it's a small, busy city set midway between Helsinki and Turku, the provincial capital, with farming still an important sector of its economy.
