Introduction to Ruka, Finland
Ruka, short for Rukatunturi, is a ski resort in the Finnish municipality of Kuusamo. The resort boasts excellent downhill skiing conditions as well as more than 500kms of cross-country skiing tracks. The resort is part of the southern area of the Karhunkierros hiking trail, which provides challenging and scenic routes. Ruka is the perfect location for adventure junkies, with 605kms of biking routes, 160kms of hiking trails, 100kms of boating routes and 350kms of classified paddling routes. The resort has developed into a year-round tourist centre, and there are plenty of Ruka hotels to choose from. It also has one of Europe's longest ski seasons, which usually lasts from October until June, and flood-lit skiing is provided on 23 of its 29 ski slopes. In the summer, the resort becomes a centre for mountain biking and hiking. Canoeing and white water rafting are popular, while for those who are less energetic, fishing and bird-watching are regular pastimes.
