Nokia is a town in the Finnish region of Pirkanmaa, with a population in excess of 30,000 inhabitants. It lies on the Nokianvirta River, 15kms west of Tampere. The roots of the famous mobile phone business come from the river, where a paper mill was started up almost 140 years ago, named after the nearby manor of Nokia. The village built around the paper mill has developed into an industrial town with main branches including paper, rubber, metal and textile. As well as being a thriving industrial town, Nokia draws visitors due to its surrounding natural beauty. The area boasts an abundance of lakes, rivers and attractive countryside where a variety of outdoor activities are offered. For boating enthusiasts, trips can be arranged from Nokia, across Lake Pyhajarvi to Tampere. Nokia hotels are spread out across the town and cater for visitors on various budgets, while transport links to the north, south, east and west of the country are excellent as the main Highway 3 and Highway 12 run past the town.
