Kuhmo is a Finnish town and municipality in the Kainuu region. The town is located centrally in the far east of the country, just a few kilometres away from the Russian border. Kuhmo is famous throughout Finland for its annual Chamber Music Festival, held in July, which was founded more than 40 years ago. The most notable building in the town is the New Library, which is an outstanding illustration of contemporary Finnish architecture. There are a number of Kuhmo hotels to be found in idyllic lakeside locations and within walking distance of the town centre. Possibly the most popular attraction in the town is Kalevala Village, which is three kilometres east of the town centre. This open-air museum tells of Karelian folk history, with artisan displays, cultural exhibitions and costumed staff demonstrating woodcarving, fishing, tar-making and so on. Juminkeko is where you can learn in even greater depth about the Karelian culture; there are three or four detailed exhibitions staged here each year as well as audiovisuals in English.
