Introduction to Kajaani - City Centre

Even with a population of less than 40,000, Kajaani surprisingly still has a variety of interesting attractions. The most historical monument in the city is Kajaani castle, which today is only a few ruins after it was blown up by Russian forces during the Great Northern War in 1716. What's left, however, are scenic remains, as the site is on an island in the middle of the River Kajaani which sits right in the heart of the city. The world's only operational tar channel is a unique feature which dates back to when the production of tar was a major export here. In the summer, demonstrations highlight how the tar produced from pine trees and reveal slightly more obscure details, such as the techniques needed for rowing through tar in the channel. To taste authentic regional dishes, the restaurants inside the Kaukametsa Culture Centre are good options. Kajaani City Centre hotels which tend to be mid-range options.
