Finland is one of the most unspoilt countries in northern Europe, with swathes of scenic countryside and uncongested cities appealing to the more discerning traveller. Many travellers get here by flying into Helsinki, the Finnish capital and economic centre. The best time to visit is in summer. Strolling around the city and admiring the Russian architecture is easy, while outdoor cafes and bars are in full swing. July is the peak holiday season, when many Finns take their annual leave. It is worth noting that Finland hotels can be more crowded than normal at this time. Summertime also sees local Finns head to their cottage retreats. There are nearly 200,000 lakes in this country, many of which are located in the numerous national parks. Here, guests can enjoy their favourite pastimes such as swimming, fishing and relaxing in a sauna. In the winter, skiing takes over, hosted by lively mountain resorts such as Levi in Lapland, in the far north of the country. Lapland is notable as the mythical home of Santa Claus, something which has encouraged locals to develop a niche tourist industry catering to Santa lovers.Visit our Finland Travel Guide
