Espoo - enjoy the beautiful scenery of Kaitalampi Lake
One of Finland’s hidden secret this lake is a favorite of families especially during the summer season. Some say it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Summer season has fresh fruits and mushrooms that can be picked. In the winter as with much of Finland the lake is frozen with beautiful winter landscapes. Swim and canœe in the summer, skate and ski in the winter.
Espoo - visit and view art in the WeeGee Exhibition Centre
There are a number of museums and exhibitions here but the modern art centre, EMMA, houses one of the largest art collections in Finland. Started in the 1950’s here are 2 areas with around 2,500 works of art. The permanent hosts the Saastamonien Foundation Art collection whilst the second rotates different displays of Modern Art from around Europe. Closed on Mondays. Entry for under 18s free entry
Helsinki - bargain hunt in the Valtterrin Flea Market
Flea markets can be found all over Finland and this is by far the largest. Great bargains on everything can be found here from glass ware to souvenirs. It is in an old warehouse and not easily obvious. There are more stalls at the weekend where you can negotiate on the price of items. Take a Finnish speaker to get better prices
Helsinki - take a boat trip to Helsinki Zoo
From rainforest to Desert via Arctic tundra the whole animal world is here on one Island. The trip on the zoo boat over to the island sets the scene and the kids will love it. There are over 150 species of animal and 1000 plants to admire and wonder at. The Zoo is open every day except Christmas Day . If there in September look out for the special cat nights.
Jyvaskyla - take a relaxing summer time lake cruise
Day trips, night trips, dining cruises, short trips Lake Paijjanne has it all. There are different cruises on different days so be sure to check their details in order that you do not miss out on these scenic trips. Most of the trips are held in June – August and last from 2 -3 hours although there are some trips in May and September.
Levi - hit the slopes at the Levi Ski Resort
Everything that you need to enjoy a skiing holiday. Learn to ski on the superb nursery slopes and the hone your skills on the slopes and enjoy thee views from the ski lifts. 45 Pistes of fun. Over 230km of cross country skiing and 886km skimobile slopes. Should there be shortage of snow there are still slopes with artificial snow where you can learn or practice.
Tampere - admire the paintings and carving of the Tampere Cathedral
One of the newer cathedrals in Finland this one was built between 1902 and 1906 and has been involved in controversy since its opening. Modern in design there are paintings of snakes, skeletons and naked boys by Finnish artist Hugo Simberg. The cathedral looks very traditional from the outside. Look for the winged serpent on the ceiling. Unusually there are 6 different entrances to the cathedral.
Tampere - take a walk in Pyynikki Park
The Observation Tower is on the top of the highest ridges around the lake and offers excellent views across the region. The wooded area around the tower is over 50 hectares in size and contains gentle and steep walks. Depending on the level you are at the wood changes so the walk is all that more enjoyable. The donuts in the café have a great reputation.
Turku - discover the the Luostarinmaki Handicrafts Museum
An outdoor museum that is full of traditional craftsmanship with over 30 different workshops. In the summer there are craftsmen there every day showing their skills. There are special days during august where masters and apprentices show and sell their wares. There has been a handicraft museum here from 1940 which helped preserve a traditional part of Finland’s history.
Turku - explore and discover Turke Castle
The castle is over 700 years old and was once on an island butt was expanded over the centuries. It now houses the Turku Historical Museum and is filled with historic architecture, weapons and suits of armor, having textiles. It also depicts a history of Finland in an interesting way. The castle is open every day except Monday’s and holidays
