As a starting point, Senate Square boasts perfect neo-classical architecture in its four gracious buildings, Government Palace, the National Library, University of Helsinki and the Lutheran Cathedral. The dominant white cathedral is an icon of the city and, standing proudly in the square's centre, is a statue of Russian czar Alexander II. Market Square is where the community's connections with the sea can be seen, from the thriving street stalls selling fresh seafood as well as more unusual items and souvenirs. Helsinki has many beautiful churches, but a real masterpiece of design is the Church in the Rock.
