Introduction to Helsinki, Finland
A towering, five dome cathedral which took over 20 years to build has dominated Helsinki's skyline since 1852. Although the city was founded in 1550, it did not become Finland's national capital until 1812, the year Russian tsars rebuilt the city to make it more closely resemble St Petersburg. Helsinki hotels dot this recently named European Capital of Culture which is filled with majestic buildings such as its cathedral, Greek-style parliament building, pale blue city hall and imposing presidential palace. Equally old, but far more modest, wooden buildings dominate the Kamppi district. Many visitors choose to explore this city of coastlines and peninsulas aboard scenic boat tours around its surrounding islands. One of these islands, Pihlajasaari, is the city's biggest beach getaway. A bridge connects the city to Korkeasaari, the rocky island containing Finland's largest zoo. The Linnanmaki Amusement Park features at least 40 different rides and the main winter attraction is the 40m Paloheinan Maki hill.Visit our Helsinki Travel Guide
